About Dairy Monitor

Every day, dairy farmers are faced with several management decisions that affect the success of their operation. The odds of making the right decision are directly affected by the quality of information that is at their disposal. The Dairy Monitor is a FREE management tool that will put more information into producers’ hands and greatly enhance the quality of their decision making.

How does the Dairy Monitor work?

Production Monitoring Program (PMP)

Producers will often observe a shift in milk production and assume that it is caused by a particular management change. By comparing production to the same period in the previous year, one can determine if there is a production shift that always occurs at that time of year. In addition, the PMP provides a quick and accurate means to evaluate the impact of management or nutritional changes on animal performance.

For example, let’s assume that a new fresh cow program has been adopted on the farm. By looking at the change in milk production in early lactation cows, you can see if the milk production from this group of cows will improve over the months following the introduction of the new program.

Similarly, by looking at butterfat : protein ratios, farmers can determine the short and long term benefits of nutritional strategies that are designed to alter milk composition as part of a quota optimization program.

Health Monitoring Program (HMP)

Health monitoring is now made easier with color graphs that give a historical context and give accurate measures of items such as Retain placentas, milk fever, displaced abomasums, reproductive performance and more.

Again this component of the Dairy Monitor will help determine the needs and the results of management decisions.

Benchmark Program

This component of the Dairy Monitoring Program has the ability to help producers see how their herd production stacks up against other herds in the region in an unbiased measurable way. These comparisons can be done regionally and nationally. It can then be determined where this herd ranks within the region across a number of parameters. Herds are assigned an anonymous number known only to that particular producer to ensure privacy.
